It is often noticed because it is located at the north end of the highly popular Sanibel Island. When people discover Captiva Island at the north end of Sanibel they often have many questions about Sanibel's smaller sister island. One of them is if North Captiva is part of Captiva Island.
Is North Captiva Part of Captiva Island?
The answer to this question is no. Though North Captiva sounds like it is just a portion of actual Captiva Island, they are two separate islands. North Captiva Island is separated from Captiva Island by Redfish Pass, a body of water that connects Pine Island Sound with the Gulf of Mexico.
About North Captiva Island
North Captiva Island is sometimes also called Upper Captiva Island (another name leading people to think it encompasses a portion of the actual Captiva Island). North Captiva Island is not connected in any way to Captiva Island or the mainland The only way to get to North Captiva Island is by boat, jet ski, ferry, or a very small plane with special prior permission to fly in. The island is a no-car island. The only way to get around North Captiva is by golf cart or bike.
North Captiva Island is a perfect getaway island because you have to be more thoughtful in your travel to get here. The beaches feature white sugary sand and crystal-clear water. The island is so small you won't even miss having a car. Most people walk or travel with a golf cart along the sandy unpaved roads. It keeps the atmosphere relaxed and makes it incredibly safe especially for children.
The Island Club at North Captiva offers the perfect island getaway with the amenities and niceties of modern living. The club features a popular poolside restaurant. It's popular for its burgers and the amazing cocktails served up by friendly staff.
North Captiva was once part of Captiva Island. The islands split as a result of the Tarpon Springs Hurricane in 1921 which created a channel now known as Redfish Pass. About 50 years after the hurricane people began to settle on North Captiva. There are somewhere around 300 full-time residents living on this "remote" southwest barrier island. Many homes are located along the northernmost tip of the island and down toward the bay. As more people build homes on the island, measures have been put in place to limit the number of buildings to preserve the natural beauty of the island. Real estate on North Captiva starts at around $1.2 million.
About Captiva Island
Captiva is the smaller sister island of Sanibel Island. Not many people realize Captiva is there until they visit Sanibel. Unlike North Captiva, Captiva Island can be accessed by a car, but only through driving across the entire length of Sanibel Island. Captiva is connected to Sanibel with a bridge on Sanibel's west end. Captiva used to be part of Sanibel Island until a hurricane created Blind Pass and separated the island in two in 1926. The Pass was dredged in 2009 to make the separation permanent as it refilled over time. Captiva has some unique secrets of its own, like being the place where a portion of the film G.I Jane was filmed and a favorite spot of Theodore Roosevelt. This quiet island is also a spot where some celebrities have come to live and/or vacation in privacy.
Captiva is 7 miles long, about half the length of Sanibel. Though it is small it is not lacking in natural southwest Florida beauty or fun things to do. Captiva is home to some of South Florida's favorite restaurants the most recognized is probably the Bubble Room with its colorful paint and the Tween Waters Resort for its location and upscale dining venues.
There are many more homes to be found on Captiva as compared to North Captiva Island. There is a wider variety of home types on Captiva as well. If you are looking for something that is quiet and allows for privacy but not necessarily the optimal privacy of a car-less island, Captiva, Sanibel's little sister is a good choice. Captiva Island has a great farmers market that opens seasonally and it is getting ready to open for another season in a few days.
The Captiva Island Farmers Market
This will be the sixth year of the Captiva Island Farmers Market. The market was started after the two owners saw several visitors to the Sanibel Island Farmers Market coming in from Captiva. These owners are Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura, the co-owners of the organizing company for the market, Local Roots.
Jean and Betsy firmly believe in the benefit of farmers markets on a local community. They have seen the market bring people in the community together connecting local vendors and artisans more easily with the public and with each other.
There are expected to be around 25 vendors participating in the market this year. Some of the items available for purchase include local produce, baked goods, smoothies, crepes, french pastries, and several handmade items locally crafted.
New Vendors Arriving This Year
There will be some new faces coming to the Captiva Farmers Market this year. One of these anticipated new vendors is Mediterranean Delight with freshly prepared Mediterranean dishes. Another new anticipated vendor is That Butt Is Smokin' which is a local restaurant that serves smoked pulled pork.
Returning Favorites to the Farmers Market
Many beloved vendors show up at the Captiva Farmers Market some have been here since the beginning. Some of these returning popular vendors include 12 Season Farms, Jimmy's Java, Angelic Desserts, Molly Malone Seafood, Pilar's Empanadas, Holi Cow, and the Fouta Spot.
The Captiva Island Market is Dog Friendly
If you have a furry family member the farmers market is pet friendly and encourages you to bring your dogs along as you shop the outdoor market. The restaurant opened May 15th, 2023 in a prime spot on the Gulf of Mexico offering the most breathtaking views. “I’m amazed at the outstanding performance and professionalism of our many teams to make Shipyard Restaurant a reality, given what we’ve all been through since the end of September. 'Tween Waters remains, even after seven months, the only full-service resort on the islands, and the fact that we’re evolving our offerings to provide even better guest experiences makes me very, very proud. We hope you join us soon!”
Shipyard is located right on the waterfront at the resort and just next to it towering at a higher elevation will be the Crow's Nest Steakhouse the second 'Tween Waters restaurant set to open later this year. It is important that those who live on the beach know how to live in harmony with these gorgeous creatures so that they will be around for generations to come.
In 2015 the city of Sanibel Florida received a $6000 grant from the Sea Turtle Conservancy License Plate Grant Program. With this grant, the city has initiated a new educational campaign with the slogan of” after nine it’s turtle time” to help residents remember as well as visitors and vacationers to close curtains and blinds and turn off any outdoor lights after dark.
Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1 on Captiva Island and ends on October 31 every year.
Hatching sea turtles are guided to the ocean by an instinct to travel away from dark silhouettes in the dune vegetation and toward the horizon line to the water. This spot provides light from the sky reflecting off of the ocean waters that guide them “home”. Artificial lights such as those over decks and porches near the beach can deter females from nesting and even disorient hatching sea turtle babies. A large number of hatchlings then end up wandering inland and die of exhaustion, dehydration, or even being caught by a predator. There are local ordinances in effect around the whole year to prohibit both interior and exterior lights from illuminating the beach for any structure built along the beach.
Sources of light that cause issues for sea turtle hatchlings
Interior lighting
It is not only the outside lights that are shining right onto outdoor areas on the beach that can cause disorientation for a hatchling sea turtle. Even just one light in a small beachfront condo is enough to disrupt a sea turtle from finding the water.
Exterior lighting sources
This is probably the most thought-about light source when people think of lights that could detour a sea turtle hatchling from finding the sea. This can be exterior lights including floodlights, porch ceiling fan lights, parking area lights, and any other lighting fixture that would be directly, indirectly, or just barely illuminating any area around a nest in the sand.
Portable lighting sources
Some people have attempted to walk along the beach after dark on Captiva Island and other areas of Florida in hopes to get in a peaceful walk or to come upon a sea turtle ready to nest or in the middle of nesting, or watch cute little baby turtles on their way to the ocean. While these people mean no harm, if they are carrying a flashlight lantern or are using a camera with flash photography all of these things can be detrimental.
Helpful solutions that help tiny turtles
Close all curtains and blinds in windows facing the beach or on the side of your home that could create light for the beach or turn off lights
As soon as it gets dark all shades should be drawn even over windows and sliding glass doors that are tinted with what is called turtle glass. Blackout shades are extremely helpful if you would like to continue using lights in rooms with windows that cast light onto the beach.
Shield or turn off all lights that are outdoors near or facing the beach that creates light on the beach
You can replace all outdoor lights with low-wattage bulbs or yellow or amber bulbs that are LED to help drastically reduce the amount of light on the beach or you can set up these lights with timers to be off during peak nesting times or hatching times.
Avoid using any flashlights, lanterns, and flash photography while on the beach after dark
If you would really like to go beachcombing after dark you can cover the lens of your flashlight with red cellophane to help make it less disruptive for sea turtles on the beach.
