There are many yearly traditions that people enjoy as well as new fun events that pop up from year to year. Some say that December is the beginning of the best weather on Sanibel Island so the holiday season really does shine on the islands. Here is the latest news on 2023 holiday events happening on both Sanibel Island and Captiva Island

Sanibel Lights

December kicks off with the Sanibel Lights annual event. This event is put on by the Community House and Saint Michael and All Angels Church. This year's event takes place on December 1 from 4 PM to 7 PM. Enjoy amazing holiday light displays and stroll between two different locations with a lit-up shared-use path.

The community house will have live entertainment with children singing Christmas carols as well as refreshments including cookies, punch, and popcorn. If you have children with you they can grab a take-a-long craft for some fun later during the season. Several nonprofit organizations will have booths to sell unique gifts and raise funds. There will also be wine and beer available for purchase.

The church will have a tree-shaped bounce house as well as games and crafts and caroling for everyone to join in led by the church choir. Enjoy a hot dog dinner as well as punch and cookies. The church will be full of festive family fun. You can also enjoy a professional holiday photo with free digital copies. All Angels Church is located at 2304 Periwinkle Way and the Community House is located at 2173 Periwinkle Way.

Deck the Shore

Deck the Shore is an event on December 1 from 4 to 6 PM hosted by the Sanibel Historical Museum and The Village. This is a free event allowing attendees to take a stroll through The Village. There will be live Christmas carols performed by the Big Arts Community Chorus at 4:30. A lighthouse-themed tree lighting ceremony will take place at 5:45. There will be refreshments including cookies, wine, cheese, and punch. The gift shop will be open for anyone searching for a great holiday gift. All of this will help to usher in the official opening of The Village on December 2. The Village is located at 950 Dunlop Rd.

The Big Arts Holiday Open House

Big Arts is a beloved program of performing and other arts on Sanibel Island. On December 1 from 5 to 7 Big Arts is hosting a holiday open house. This is a free event that will kick off the holiday season in 2023 which is entitled Holiday Magic. Come to the event and enjoy a visit and photo with Santa from 6 to 7 PM. You can also enjoy live Christmas carolers and instructor demonstrations with complimentary champagne cocktails and light bites. There is also a cash bar available. If you would like to shop some of the artwork from local artists the gift shop will be open as well. Big Art is located at 900 Dunlop Rd.

Captiva Holiday Bazaar

The Captiva Holiday Bazaar will be on Monday, December 4 from 2 to 7 PM and Tuesday, December 5 from 10 AM to 4 PM. It is a great spot to stop by and see what local artists have created and find a great gift. The bazaar will be at the Captiva Civic Center at 11550 Chapin Ln.

Wreath Decorating

Head to the Sanibel Recreation Center on December 9 from 10 AM to noon and decorate your own wreath for the season. There is a registration fee of $22 for members and $27 for nonmembers. The cost covers all of the materials to make your wreath and there is complementary coffee and cocoa.

Holiday Wine Preview on Captiva Island

Come out and sample curated fine wines from Calli Johnson a wine steward at Baileys General Store located at the Island Store of Captiva. This holiday wine preview includes selections for your holiday entertaining plans. Enjoy your own individual charcuterie with a pairing of eight wines perfect for serving at yearly festivities. Mingle and taste the wines at your own pace and browse through other unique wine offerings. Guests will be able to purchase wines that they enjoy from the night and take home some helpful holiday recipes that pair perfectly with the wine they take home. This is a ticketed event check-in for information on purchasing tickets at the Captiva Civic Association. The event is scheduled for December 11 from 5 PM to 7 PM.

Santa's Dolphin and Wildlife Cruise to Picnic Island

Cruise alongside dolphins out to Picnic Island to visit Santa before he takes off for the big night. Get photos with Santa and little ones will receive a special gift from the big guy. Reservations are required so reserve your spot as soon as possible for the limited space. The event is on Christmas Eve beginning at 10 AM from the G dock on the Port Sanibel Marina.
