Chamber of Commerce - Blind Pass Dredging Update
The Blind Pass dredging project off Sanibel started last week after being delayed for several weeks due to weather and mechanical issues.
The dredging will take place at Blind Pass, between Sanibel and Captiva.
Equipment is in place to remove 120,000 cubic yards of sand and put it back on the shore near Bowman's Beach.
The need to dredge is crucial. If Blind Pass fills in completely, it will become stagnant, killing fish and plants.
One of the biggest challenges of this project doesn't have anything to do with equipment, but with wildlife. Crews have to make sure they don't disturb the nesting turtles or birds. "It's being inspected daily," said Stephenson.
Weather permitting, the project will wrap up in August. The project will run seven days a week, 24 hours a day. During certain phases of the work, portions of parking and the bridge will be closed to the public
Work began for the project over the weekend, blocking off about 12 parking spots in the lot just north of the pass on Captiva, and tugging equipment along the beach.
When completed in late August, the pass will deepen the waters for boaters, make the waters livable for marine life, and bring more sand to the beaches
