Dinkins Bayou History
The community is named for Josiah, Jackson Dinkins, born in 1849 and grew up in the Magnolia Midlands area in Georgia. He moves to Florida in 1868 and became a steamboat engineer, licensed in Apalachicola. He was known as Captain Josiah Dinkins. In 1870, he moved to Tamp and then to Fort Myers and married in 1894 and began homesteading on Sanibel Island. He and other settlers grew citrus and vegetables but due to the weather, farming was a tricky occupation on Sanibel. Over the years, he divorced and remarried and eventually died in Tampa at age 92. But his legacy lives on for those kayaking, boating and fishing on Dinkins Bayou.
